English Picture Books

All the lesson plans and activities which appear on this website are designed to cover the Speaking and Listening outcomes for the K-6 English syllabus because they all involve children listening to and discussing a picture book.

The English picture books on this page go one step further: they’re great for introducing specific literary devices, genres or concepts. These include the genres of poetry and biography and literary devices such as similes, metaphor, personification and alliteration. These can all be tricky for children to understand and starting with a picture book is always a good idea!

For each picture book we have included the following free, printable resources:

  • a step-by-step lesson plan, including discussion questions, writing activities and suggestions for other activities related to the text;
  • 1-3 differentiated wordsearch puzzles, using vocabulary from the book;
  • a writing/drawing template which can be used for a variety of writing activities related to the text;

More picture books to help you teach English concepts are being added regularly so check back soon to see what’s available to help in your teaching.
